I’ve been working from home since 2017 when I quit my corporate job to start my own marketing company. And over the years I’ve found a few things that are a requirement for me to be productive, comfortable and happy! While many of us are going back to work in the office, it still seems like we’ll all be spending time at home working and juggling all the things so I thought I’d share a few of my must haves here with you.

Comfort

I must be comfortable at my desk or it doesn’t work. I sit for long periods of time so I needed to make sure that I’m not wrecking my back and neck. I recently got an Ergo Foam Foot rest for my desk. I am short so it really helps me sit correctly. PLUS, it’s soft – I also hate wearing socks.

I live in Minnesota so it’s COLD!!! So I always have a blanket on me. I recently got this UnHide blanket (pictured left) and it is the coziest blanket I’ve ever used. My whole family tries to steal it from me regularly. I also have a space heater that runs almost constantly! 😂

Finally, for when it gets warm outside I have my LED light on my desk. It includes a fan which I love! And the LED wand is flexible and has multiple options so I can use it as lighting for my video calls.

Beauty Products

Having things at my desk that allow me to pamper myself throughout the day, or just take care of my skin, make things so much easier. Some of my staples include: hair ties, Beauty Counter lip gloss, nail strengthening cream, and chapstick.

Office Supplies

Who doesn’t love office supplies. I definitely am obsessed with all things pens and sticky notes.  My newest favorite are the Sharpie gel pens. And of course I have to have them multi colored so that I can keep all my stuff organized! I also love to have multiple shapes and sizes of post it notes. That way I can keep my planner organized and keep notes to myself on the wall behind my computer.

Speaking of planners – I’m OBSESSED with the Full Focus Planner. I’m still a paper girl at heart. Something about writing things down helps me to remember all the things. I like that it just sits at my desk and when tasks pop into my head I can write them down and revisit them at a later time.

I store all my Color Street sets in my office as well. I’ve found that the large fridge bins from Wal-Mart work well at holding them and make it easy to sort through them all.

Tech

When I’m not doing Color Street I’m a digital marketing strategist. So that means lots of Zooms, podcast recordings, client meetings and creating video content. Side bar: would you be interested in a podcast or YouTube channel about what it’s like to be a Color Street stylist and tips for using our product? My must haves here are lighting (we like LED panels vs a ring light), a good microphone, and a camera. For the camera we typically use the built in one on my Macbook Pro. But camera phone can work great as well!

I also have a project management program, ClickUp, that helps me keep things organized so my marketing team knows what’s on deck. It also manages my customers for Color Street as well as my inventory.

Hydration

I typically have no less than 3 different liquid containers on my desk at all times. Am I alone here!

I also have insulated cups that are just for coffee and some that are just for tea. I love using the insulated cups because they keep my drinks warm all day long – no trips to the microwave needed!

Drinking water all day is something I’m always striving to do better at. I’ve tried setting alarms on my phone, using smaller glasses so I get up more often to fill them up (and I feel more accomplished cause its one glass down!). I haven’t quite figured out the perfect solutions for me yet. Tips appreciated!

Conclusion

I find working from home to be a challenge at times when it comes to keeping on track. I hope some of these essentials can help you feel more calm, relaxed, and focused when you’re sitting at your home office desk (or couch) all day!
